Thoughts of the Day

1. I hate spiders.
2. The nicest man came and sprayed around where I work so I wouldn't have to find spiders anymore.
3. I cannot stop listening to the Pride and Prejudice soundtrack. To be honest, I'm not even sure I want to.
4. Presidential debates are dumb, especially when they are on the night NCIS, Parenthood, and New Girl are supposed to be on. Thanks, guys.
5. I want to go to New York (thinking of you, Kelly!). My goal: see Starry Night.

What's on your mind?

Today...

Foggy mornings. Beautiful pictures. Good music. Apple spice bread. Hilarious internet finds (Ten Best Fictional Boyfriends). Lentil soup. Bookbinding. Sunny afternoons. New opportunities. Packages waiting for me at the door.
Here's to October.

Eating Crabs and Squeamishness

I can be pret-ty squeamish. For example, I cannot eat shrimp when the legs are attached. I mean, of course no one eats the legs, but I can't bring myself to pull them off. It completely freaks me out, so if I have to pull the legs off, I won't eat any shrimp - even though I love it. I will eat it if I can get someone to pull the legs off for me, but that's kind of high maintenance, so I try to avoid that.

Anyway. I get really squeamish sometimes, but eating crabs has never bothered me. Which is great, because every summer, for as long as I can remember, my grandparents have gotten crabs. Even though we actually eat them fairly often, it always feels like a treat. I love crabs, and it's great time with my grandparents.

What are y'all's favorite summer traditions/memories?

An Evening at Home

Really, most of my evenings are spent at home. And a decent number of my evenings are spent similar to this - tonight it was watching Gilmore Girls, drinking coffee, eating a toaster strudel, sewing, and bookbinding. I like my life.

A Time For Peace

Hey, y'all. Things around here have been so crazy lately. For about a month, we had a constant flow of people going through our house - church friends and neighbors coming over to swim, the whole extended family staying for the holiday, my brother and his wife making their summer visit, and my brother's friends coming over to visit him. Now, my house is not very big. It's your standard three bedroom house. We counted how many people were here on the most crowded day and got at least 50 people at my house all at once!
On Monday, the last of our company left, so I've been spending this week recuperating. I've been reading, crocheting, cooking, watching reruns of just about anything (hello, NCIS and Frasier!), sleeping in, and enjoying the peace and quiet. Don't get me wrong - I love people. However, people exhaust me, so right now I'm glad for the break.

What do y'all do to relax?

Berry Picking

On the ride home from work today my mom told me how she had found a ton of raspberry bushes on the side of the road by our house. We went home, changed clothes, and went right back out to pick them.

This view definitely kept thinking about made me think of Red Riding Hood - I half expected a wolf to come out to get me. This thought led me to...

I also felt very hippie-like, out on the side of the road picking berries. This led me to...

This is what happens when I find a spider in my berry bucket.

Spooky, right?

What's your favorite summer fruit? Raspberries are mine, but we rarely get them at my house.

Totes The Best Hun-Cal Froyo

My brother and his wife are visiting! We spent the first week of July with my whole paternal extended family - which was crazy and awesome. This week it's just the immediate family spending time together and hanging out - shopping, eating, waching Eureka, and laughing. Today we went to Sweet Frog for frozen yogurt. I've never had frozen yogurt before (I was told that frozen Go-Gurts didn't count), and it was so good! It was definitely a great evening out.

Today I...

  • went to work
  • sang to The Beatles
  • mailed a postcard
  • wrote a poem
  • finished reading The Journals of Sylvia Plath (next: conquer Crime & Punishment so I can reward myself with Harry Potter 5-7)
  • drank super sugary caramel coffee
  • painted
  • listened to Peter, Paul, and Mary on vinyl
  • read poems by Oscar Wilde next to an open window (and overheard my neighbors making bird calls).
Now I am bored. I haven't taken many photographs lately. I'm starting to miss it, but I don't know what to take pictures of - I feel I've exhausted my resources. I need to go somewhere new, do something new (crossing my fingers for D.C. next weekend). I'd also really like to be part of a photo shoot.

What do y'all do when boredom strikes?

Thrifting - Shop Therapy

I have a serious problem - but at least it's not an expensive one. I love thrift store shopping. I can find tons of stuff for so cheap. This week, I got nine records for $8 (although they did take a lot of cleaning before they would work - but hey, it's worth it for The Beatles and Bob Dylan), seven books for $6 (thank you, library book store!), and two coffee mugs for 50 cents (I'm so addicted to coffee mugs...it will come in handy for after dinner coffee - you know, someday when I have my own house and throw dinner parties...).

(Okay, this one actually came in the mail, but I'm so excited for it, so I'm sharing it! Also...I'm beginning to realize how well the title depicts my personality...)

SO excited for these. Are any of y'all Agatha Christie fans?

Tea With My Mom

For Christmas 2011, I gave my mom a coupon type deal to go out for tea with me. Five months later, we finally went. We went to a place called TranquilaTea in Waynseboro, PA. It was so cute! Everything was super girly. They had pretty tea cups all around, and vintage hats on the walls if you wanted to play dress up. They had a huge selection of teas, and the food was all homemade and delicious. (I went to a tea house before that was buffet style with bags of tea and cookies you can buy at Walmart. It was less than exciting).
Anyway, TranquilaTea was very charming, and if you live in the area, you should definitely check it out.

Snapshots

Frostys with my grandma after I drove her to physical therapy.

Babysitting.

It was kind of a David Bowie week. I watched Labyrinth, too.

One of my new coffee mugs. Isn't it grand?

Outdoor concert.

A friend.

Pool time, cool time!
Have any of y'all read that book? I'm loving it so far. So much that I'll probably write a post on it soon.

A Day In The Life

Today has been grey and rainy and splendid. I spent the day cooking jambalaya, baking chai cupcakes, reading Agatha Christie's Sleeping Murder (my favorite), and listening to Ray LaMontagne over and over again. I also finally got my embroidery thread in the mail, which means I can work on shop orders again! Below, I've got a sneak peek of what's to come.
